Carnival

Carnival on the Piazza Duomo

The Acireale Carnival developed amongst the splendor of architecture that acts as a backdrop to parades of allegorical-grotesque and flowered floats, groups of masked celebrants. It has a three hundred year history, dating back to the 1600’s, when the city was freed of the vassals and became the crown property of Aragon. In 1700, Carnival became folklore, with popular events with improvised poetry competitions in the local dialect. The 19th century refined the event, with parades of elegant “landaus” and costumed teams that provided enjoyment to both the populace and nobility. Today, Carnival is a major tourist and entertainment event, organized to meet the needs of modern participants.
